Phthalates & Heavy Metals in Consumer Products & Waste Electronics
Introduction
New regulations are constantly being enacted to protect consumers from a variety of potentially dangerous chemicals and elements. The recent regulations worldwide have restricted levels of heavy metals in consumer products and waste electronics. Regulations have also been enacted to control a variety of phthalates in children’s products.
Phthalates (phthalate esters,) are esters of phthalic acid and are mainly used as plasticizers. New regulations are constantly being enacted to protect consumers from a variety of potentially dangerous chemicals and elements in children’s toys and child care articles. They contain concentrations of more than 0.1 percent of di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP), dibutyl phthalate (DBP), or butyl benzyl phthalate (BBP). And the list will be expanded to include any of the following phthalates containing concentrations of more than 0.1 percent: diisononyl phthalate (DINP), diisobutyl phthalate (DIBP), di-n-pentyl phthalate (DPENP), di-n-hexyl phthalate (DHEXP), and dicyclohexyl phthalate (DCHP).
